Welcome to Sgt. Jordan Shay Memorial Lower Elementary School

Shay Elementary is Grades PreK - 2

At SHAY, we believe that the early years of education are crucial for laying the foundation for lifelong learning. Our dedicated team of educators is committed to creating a nurturing, engaging, and supportive environment where every child can grow academically, as well as, emotionally.

Success for all is achieved when schools and families work together. We strive to build effective partnerships with families, caregivers, community members, and organizations. We encourage each family to become active participants in our school community and to collaborate with teachers to support each child’s educational  journey.

About SGT Jordan Shay

Jordan Shay grew up in Amesbury and graduated from the public school system in 2005.

He enlisted in the US Army the following year. Posthumously awarded the rank of Sergeant, Shay served honorably in Attack Company, 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment based in Fort Lewis Washington. While serving his second tour of duty in Iraq Sgt. Shay lost his life on September 2, 2009 from injuries sustained on patrol. At just 22 years old he was the first Amesbury resident to die in combat since the Vietnam War.

While deployed Jordan requested in a letter home to his family that if something should happen to him a scholarship fund should be created in his name. He wrote that it should benefit students interested in public safety who “want to make a difference in the world.” The SGT Jordan M. Shay Memorial Foundations has supported many instructional programs in Amesbury Public Schools and provides support to Veterans in the region.

Jordan was a gifted writer who blogged about his experiences in Iraq and enjoyed hiking, scuba diving and golfing. May this school for our youngest learners, named in his memory and poised amidst the rolling hills of Woodsom Farm, serve as inspiration for our children to follow Jordan’s example of courage, bravery and sacrifice for the greater good.

“He was a true and steady friend to all who crossed his path.” Holly Shay, Jordan’s Mom
